Personally, I think the single most important item in a rabbit diet is hay – and fed in unlimited quantities to both adults and baby rabbits. A rabbit fed lots of pellets and no hay, fruit, or veges does not get the fibre needed for good intestinal function. Topflite Rabbit & Guinea Pig pellets are good as what I would term a ‘side dish’ for my rabbits and I also daily give them small amounts of carrot, apple, lettuce, spinach, watercress etc. Vary their diet, human beings would not tolerate the same old same old when it comes to food; and so rabbits too like a bit of variety at times. The old adage that you “don’t give rabbits lettuce because it gives them diarrhoea” is, in my personal opinion, untrue unless you are really overdoing it. Lettuce is basically water but a little bit given to rabbits now and then is perfectly natural. I mean, were not most of us brought up as kids on Beatrix Potter’s tales of Peter Rabbit and how he stole lettuces from Mr McGregor’s garden?? Wild rabbits are not given pellets and special foods! Lettuce and greens are natural foods for rabbits. Don’t overdo it and you should be OK. Its only when people get carried away with kindness and ‘overfeed’ that they cause problems in the dietary systems of their rabbits. Fresh greens contain nutrients, fibre and are just likeable and tasty for rabbits, as well as keeping their intestines healthy. The big no no comes with not providing ‘fresh’ vegetables…if they smell just the slightest bit off, then DON’T feed them to your rabbits. Water is also very important, as is fresh fruit – fresh fruit however should only be given in very small quantities because too much will cause cecal dysbiosis in rabbits. Common sense prevails when feeding bunnies and ask around at specialist pet food stores and veterinarians to get the correct advice. But don’t take it upon yourself to think you know best when it comes to looking after rabbits as they can get sick very quickly from the wrong food and not enough care and attention.
